About Black Dog Philanthropic
Black Dog Philanthropic Consulting was founded in 2022 by Lili Leonard, a career fundraising professional, who believes in the transformative power of small- to mid-size nonprofit organizations.
Lili and Ruby (yes, the “Black Dog” is real!) are proud to be a Therapy Dog and R.E.A.D. Team with Wags for Hope. Ruby earned her AKC Canine Good Citizen designation in 2017!
Lili is a seasoned fundraising professional with more than 15 years of experience spanning annual and mid-level giving, major gifts, capital campaigns, grant writing, and fundraising strategy. Her work has supported nonprofits across Maryland and beyond, from grassroots organizations to statewide institutions, helping them strengthen fundraising systems, build leadership capacity, and secure transformational philanthropic investment.
In addition to her consulting work, Lili regularly designs and facilitates fundraising trainings for cohorts of nonprofits, often in partnership with community foundations and sector leaders. She has worked in higher education, large national nonprofits, small and mid-sized local organizations, and global membership associations. She earned her Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation in 2017 and is a Standards for Excellence Licensed Consultant, as well as a graduate of Leadership Maryland’s Executive Program, Class of 2025.
A lifelong Marylander, Lili earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Salisbury University and her Doctorate from Frostburg State University. Her doctoral research applied a communities of practice framework to examine the successful 2015 effort to save Sweet Briar College, offering insights into collective action, leadership, and stakeholder mobilization that continue to inform her consulting work today.
In her spare time, she enjoys working on her orange Jeep, Clementine, which recently surpassed 270,000 miles.
